Breast Reduction

Breast reduction (or, reduction mammoplasty) is a procedure to reduce breast size, and in some cases - to improve symmetry:

  • Breast reduction can relieve back or neck ache associated with large breasts,

  • It helps to lift the breast and reposition the nipple to create an aesthetically harmonious look,

  • It can improve aesthetic breast symmetry and boost confidence.

Prior to breast reduction, you may be required to have a mammogram. During a reduction mammoplasty, excess skin and breast tissue are removed from the breast to reduce its size and to lift the breast. The nipples are then repositioned to suit the new shape. You should expect an incision scar around each areola (the darker skin of the nipple), down to the fold of the breast and often along the fold of your breast.

After a breast reduction, your breasts will settle into a more natural shape within a few months. You will be advised to wear a surgical-approved supportive bra for 6 - 8 weeks to support the shape while tissues are healing. Reduction mammoplasty can occasionally affect breastfeeding, so speak with your surgeon if you plan a pregnancy following surgery.
